United States President Donald Trump said on Sunday (31) that the elimination of tariffs imposed by his government against several countries would endanger the American economy and national security.
In a publication on the Truth Social Network, Trump wrote that “without the tariffs, and the entire trillion of dollars we have already collected, our country would be completely destroyed and our military power would be instantly obliterated.”
The statement came two days after a federal court of appeals to decide, by 7 votes to 4, that the US President exceeded his authority by resorting to emergency powers to impose import tariffs. Despite the decision, the judges determined that the measures remain in force until October, during which time the government may resort to the Supreme Court.
In his post, Trump criticized the magistrates who voted against the maintenance of tariffs and highlighted the position of a judge who was nominated by former President Barack Obama, who voted in favor of tariffs.
“A radical group of judges didn’t care, but an Obama-nominated Democrat voted to save our country. I want to thank him for his courage! He loves and respects the US,” he said.
In another publication, made on Monday (1st), Trump warned that the cancellation of tariffs would have a direct impact on investments announced in his government. “If a radical leftist is allowed to eliminate these tariffs, almost all this investment, and more, it will be canceled immediately,” he wrote. The president added that without the tariffs, the United States could become “a third world nation, with no hope of returning to greatness.”
Republican has defended tariffs as the main tool to strengthen the US economy. According to data from the Treasury Department released on August 28, the US revenue reached US $ 183.1 billion in the current fiscal year, well above 2024. In July alone, the amount collected reached US $ 29.6 billion, the largest of the period.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, said in an interview with the station CNBC What part of this revenue can be used to reduce public debt, now around US $ 37.2 trillion.
“I think at some point we will be able to do this. We are focused on reducing the deficit/GDP ratio, starting to pay the debt, and then this feature can be used as compensation for the American people,” he said.
The Justice Department, according to Attorney General Pam Bondi, has already confirmed that he will appeal to the Supreme Court to overthrow the decision against the tariffs.
