United States President Donald Trump again caused controversy last Saturday (06) by threatening the sending of National Guard troops and Chicago immigration agents on the grounds of fighting crime. The third largest city in the country was the scene of major protests after Trump’s statements.
On his social network, Trump published a montage where he appears with a military hat, sunglasses and a war background, with helicopters and an explosion in the background. The image brings the phrase “Chipocalypse Now”, a clear reference to Francis Ford Coppola’s classic “Apocalypse Now” movie. In the caption, the former president wrote: “I love the smell of deportations in the morning. Chicago is about to find out why it is called the War Department.” The phrase alludes to a famous quote from the movie: “I love the smell of Napalm in the morning.”
The publication caused a strong popular reaction. Thousands of protesters went to the streets of Chicago with banners saying, “Stop the deportations,” “get up, fight” and “not Trump, not to troops.”
The day before, Trump signed a controversial executive order to rename the US Department of Defense, traditionally known as Pentagon, for “War Department.” The decision further fed the political and social tension in the country.
