United States President Donald Trump filed an appeal to the US Supreme Court on Wednesday asking the magistrates to reverse the decision of a Federal Court that considered the global tariffs imposed by their administration illegal.
The Justice Department filed an urgent appeal, requesting accelerated analysis of whether the president has the authority to apply rates based on a national emergency law.
The measure occurs after the Court of Appeals in Washington decide last week that Trump exceeded his powers when using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), legislation of the 1970s, to impose indefinite fees. According to the decision, the imposition of taxes, including tariffs, is a prerogative of the US Congress.
In the White House, Trump publicly defended his measures. He warned that a contrary decision could mean “devastation to our country.” The appeal presented to the Supreme Court framed the theme as a decisive choice for the US economic future.
“For the president and his main advisors, these rates have a clear choice: with tariffs, we are a rich nation; without tariffs, we are a poor nation,” says the text of the feature.
Among the measures questioned are the rates applied during the so -called “Liberation Day”, announced in April, as well as recent rates against China, Mexico and Canada, justified as a fight against fentanil entry into the US territory.
The Trump government has called for an unusual schedule of speed: that the Supreme Court decides until September 10 will accept the case and hold hearings as early as November.
Even with the decision of the Court of Appeals, the tariffs continue in force, as justice allows continuity while the process advances. According to US customs data, taxes collected with IEEPA -linked tariffs have yielded more than $ 210 billion to the Treasury only in the 2025 fiscal year.
