United States President Donald Trump praised the American Military Academy, known as West Point, for canceling a tribute that would be delivered this month to actor Tom Hanks.
“Our great West Point (getting better!) Intelligently canceled actor Tom Hanks’s awards ceremony. Important measure! We don’t need destructive honorees and Woke receiving our dear American awards!” Trump wrote on the Truth Social network.
“Hopefully Oscar and other false awards review their standards and practices in the name of impartiality and justice. [Se fizerem isso,] Your dead audience rates will shoot! ”Said the US president.
Over the weekend, The Washington Post reported that the retired Army Colonel Mark Bieger, president and executive director of the West Point Graduates Association, sent an email to the institution’s faculty on Friday (5) informing the decision.
In the message, Bieger wrote that the Alumni Association, in coordination with the gym, “will not hold the Thayer Award ceremony,” without making it clear if the prize to Hanks, who was supporter of Democratic President Joe Biden, has been revoked or will be delivered in some other format.
“This decision allows the academy to continue focused on its main mission to prepare cadets to lead, fight and win as officers in the world’s most lethal force, the United States Army,” Bieger wrote in the email.
In June, West Point had published on his site a text informing about the delivery of the Sylvanus Thayer Award from 2025 to Hanks, which would take place on September 25.
This award has been granted annually since 1958 “to an exceptional US citizen whose services and achievements in the national interest exemplify personal devotion to the ideals” of the academy.
In the text, West Point claimed that starry and Hanks films reflect his support “to veterans, the military and the American space program.”
The Military Academy also mentioned that the actor was a national spokesman for the World War II Memorial in Washington, supported by a funds collection campaign for the creation of the Dwight D. Eisenhower memorial and acted as national president of the D-Day Museum in the American capital.
