Only one person survived,” the note said. The village was “completely devastated,” added the group, which appealed to the UN and international humanitarian aid organizations to recover the bodies. Images released by the Marrah Mountains News Channel showed a flat area between mountain ranges, with a group of people searching the place. The tragedy occurred amid the devastating civil war that plagues Sudan, after tensions between the country’s armed forces and the rapid support forces (RSF) explode in open combat in April 2023, the capital capital and other parts of the country. Much of the Darfur region, including the Marrah mountains, became practically inaccessible to the UN and aid groups due to severe restrictions and clashes between the Sudanese military and RSF. Sudan’s movement/liberation army, headquartered in the Marrah Mountains, is one of several active rebel groups in the regions of Darfur and Kordofan. He did not take sides in the war. The Marrah mountains form a rugged volcanic chain that extends 160 kilometers southwest of El-Fascas, epicenter of the army and RSF fighting. The region has become refuge for displaced families that fled violence in El-Fascas and surroundings. The conflict has killed more than 40,000 people, forced more than 14 million to leave their homes and led some families to eat grass in a desperate attempt to survive as hunger spread to parts of the country. According to the UN and human rights groups, the war has been marked by serious atrocities, including murders and rapes motivated by ethnicity. The International Criminal Court said it was investigating alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. The village of Tarasin is located in the center of the Marrah Mountains, a volcanic area whose summit exceeds 3,000 meters in altitude. World Heritage, the chain is known for its lower temperatures and higher rainfall compared to neighboring areas, according to UNICEF. It is more than 900 kilometers west of the Capital Land. Sunday’s landslide was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recent Sudan history. Every year hundreds of people die due to seasonal rains from July to October.
