Brazilian Dom Ilson de Jesus Montanari, 66, was appointed by Pope Leo XIV for the position of Secretary of Dicastery for the bishops. The appointment took place last Friday (26), at the same time as the Italian Filippo Iannone was assigned as the new mayor of the Vatican organism.
According to information from EstadãoMontanari has already served as secretary in the last two five years and should remain in office for another five years.
The religious also acted as runner-up of the Catholic Church, a position that placed him as the second in the hierarchy responsible for the administrative functions after Pope Francis’ death-below only the Irish Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrel, appointed Camerlengo in 2019. In this context, Montanari had direct participation in the organization of Francisco’s funeral and funeral, died in April this year.

A native of Sertãozinho (SP), Montanari was ordained a priest in 1989 in Ribeirão Preto, where he studied law, economy and philosophy. Later, he attended theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. After performing several functions in the Archdiocese of Ribeirão Preto, he returned to the Italian capital in 2002.
In 2008, he became official for the then congregation for the bishops and, three years later, was appointed chaplain of his holiness by Pope Benedict XVI. Under the pontificate of Francis, in 2013, he assumed as secretary of the dicker for the bishops and, in the same year, received the episcopal order of the Archbishop of Ribeirão Preto, Dom Moacir Silva, becoming Bishop.
The following year, in 2014, Francisco also appointed him secretary of the College of Cardinals, consolidating his presence in the most relevant posts of the Roman Curia.
