Hundreds of Peruvians returned to the streets of Lima on Sunday (21) to protest against the government and the country congress. It was the second consecutive day of mobilizations in the capital, which recorded new clashes between police and youth groups.
On Saturday, the confrontation left 18 people injured, including police and journalists. On Sunday, the march was led by the “Generation Z” collective, which brings together young people from 18 to 30 years old. The group organized the walk towards the headquarters of the public authorities, but found police blockade.
At dusk, the tension increased. Protesters launched ceiling stones and bombs against the police, who reacted with tear gas. A large security device was mobilized in the center of the capital to contain the acts.
The demonstrations reflect a climate of growing dissatisfaction in the country. According to recent research, the population demonstrates discontent with the escalation of violence caused by organized crime, as well as criticism of corruption in the public sector and the wear and tear of the executive and the congress.
