Peru classifies cartel linked to Maduro as a terrorist group

by Marcelo Moreira

The Peru Congress approved on Wednesday (3), with 73 votes in favor, 27 opposing and five abstentions, which the country declares the Venezuelan Cartel de Los Soles as a terrorist organization.

According to a statement from the Peruvian legislature, the motion was sent to President Dina Boluarte to adopt “the necessary measures in the areas of foreign policy, security and national defense, so that Peru unites with the international community in the front combat with this criminal organization”.

“We must establish a position on the subject so that we can then generate the necessary elements to defend our sovereignty and integrity and prevent the population from being harmed by the threats that are arising,” said Deputy Jorge Montoya Manrique, one of the authors of the proposal.

The parliamentarian mentioned that, besides Venezuela, Cuba also represents a narcoterrorist threat in Latin America.

Last week, the Argentine government had announced that it also designated the Los Soles cartel as a terrorist organization, such as Ecuador and Paraguay, had done days earlier.

The United States, who have classified the cartel as a specially designated global terrorist entity, accuse Venezuela’s dictator Nicolás Maduro of being the leader of the criminal group.
