Parliament of France dismisses another premie from Macron

by Marcelo Moreira

The National Assembly, the France’s Baixa Chamber of Parliament, rejected a vote of confidence in Prime Minister François Bayrou on Monday (8), which will force him to resign from office.

According to CNN, 364 deputies voted against Bayrou and 194 voted in favor of him.

The prime minister had summoned the vote to try to approve a 44 billion euros cut plan, which included the cancellation of two national holidays and the freezing of government spending, aiming to stop the deficit in France’s public accounts.

Bayrou was only nine months ago in office. He is the second prime minister appointed by President Emmanuel Macron to be overthrown in a vote at the National Assembly in less than a year: in December, the house approved a motion of suspicion to dismiss the then Prime Minister, Michel Barnier.

In France, the president, head of state, points out a prime minister to head the government.

France is experiencing a political impasse, since none of the three main political blocks in Parliament – the Left Left Coalition FRONT POPULAR (NFP), the Nationalist Right Party National Regrouping (RN) and the Macron group – has an absolute majority in the National Assembly.

Therefore, any nominated by Macron to replace Bayrou will be, like the current premie, subject to being overthrown by a vote in the National Assembly.

The solution could be the convening of new legislative elections, which were requested by the RN in August – the nationalist right also suggested the resignation of Macron.

An early election has already been held in June and July 2024, generating the current composition that cracked the National Assembly.
