In 2011, the Palestinian Authority requested full adhesion to the UN, but the Security Council rejected the request. However, diplomatic efforts, coupled with widespread frustration with the stagnant peace process with Israel, led more than a dozen countries, including Chile, Uruguay and Peru, to recognize Palestine as a state.
