Moraes is challenging Trump, says agency

by Marcelo Moreira

The Reuters news agency published on Monday (1) a report on the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who began on Tuesday (2), where he said that the rapporteur, Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court, is challenging US President Donald Trump and “testing the patience” of his colleagues in Brazil.

“The Federal Supreme Court of Brazil enters this week in the final phase of deliberations in the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro, in a case that caused the wrath of the president of the United States, Donald Trump. No one felt both the strength of this fury – or rejected it with both disdain – as Alexandre de Moraes, the judge who put Bolsonaro in house arrest, arrested hundreds of his supporters for the government and faced the government Elon Musk about social networking content. His persecution of Bolsonaro led Trump to impose a 50% commercial tariff on Brazil, individual visas and financial sanctions, ”says the text.

In the publication, Reuters reported that at this moment there is a movement within the Supreme Court for some ministers to distance themselves from Moraes’s decisions. In this context, the agency highlighted the stance of Minister André Mendonça, appointed by Bolsonaro in 2021, conveying his recent speech, where he stated that “a good judge must be respected, not feared. His decisions must bring social peace, non -chaos, uncertainty or insecurity.”

According to Reuters, there is currently a concern within the court that Bolsonaro’s lawsuit provokes more reactions from Trump, “which has required Brazil to abandon the trial that the US president calls witch hunt.”

The report mentioned that Trump has already taken direct measures against members of the Supreme, saving, so far, only those who have spoken against Moraes decisions.

“In July, the United States government withdrew visas from eight Supreme ministers, sparing only three who had clearly diverged from Moraes in previous cases,” the text says.

The report also shows that “Moraes and his supporters say that his aggressive approach against Bolsonaro and his allies have always aimed to defend Brazilian democracy […]. His critics argue the opposite, accusing him of censorship and illegal abuse in orders to remove posts from Bolsonaro supporters on social networks, to apprehend the telephone telephones of entrepreneurs who discussed the virtues of a blow and arrest a parliamentarian who made threats against the court. ”

The article also reported that, according to Bolsonaro allies, there are already more than 41 senators in favor of opening the impeachment process of Moraes, although 54 votes are needed. The text points out, however, that Senate President David Alcolumbre has resisted the subject.
