Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), asked on Friday (5) that the first class of the Court hold an extra session for the judgment of the nucleus considered crucial of the attempted coup attributed to former President Jair Bolsonaro and seven other defendants.
The request was sent to the president of the board, Minister Cristiano Zanin. Moraes requested that the class will also meet next Thursday, September 11, in two shifts-morning and afternoon.
Initially, the calendar predicted sessions only for Tuesday (9), in the morning and afternoon; for Wednesday (10), in the morning; And for Friday (12), again in the morning and afternoon.
“I ask the Honorable President of the First Class, Minister Cristiano Zanin, to schedule new complementary sessions for the trial to be held on Thursday, 9/11/2025,” Moraes wrote in the formal request.
The trial began this week, with sessions held on Tuesday (2) and Wednesday (3). On the first day, Moraes presented the report of the case, and the Attorney General, Paulo Gonet, made his final demonstration, reinforcing the request for conviction of the eight defendants.
Following, the defenses presented their allegations. The lawyers questioned the validity of Mauro Cid’s award -winning denunciation agreement, complained of alleged defense curtailment for his lack of time to analyze the process documents and denied any connection of the accused with the coup attacks of 8 January 2023.
The acts of 8 January, which resulted in the invasion and depredation of the headquarters of the three powers in Brasilia, are the central point of the complaint. According to the prosecution, the group tried to violently abolish the Democratic Rule of Law and articulate a coup d’état.
Former President Jair Bolsonaro are defendants; former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin), Alexandre Ramagem; former Navy Commander Admiral Almir Garnier; former Justice Minister Anderson Torres; former Institutional Security Office Minister Augusto Heleno; the former presidency orders, Mauro Cid; former Defense Minister Paulo Sérgio Nogueira; and former Civil House Minister Braga Netto.
They are responsible for crimes of armed criminal association, violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, attempted coup, qualified damage and deterioration of listed heritage. Only Alexandre Ramagem will not be tried for two of these crimes, because at the time of the facts, he had already been graduated federal deputy.
It is expected that, starting next Tuesday (9), the ministers of the First Class start the vote on the merits of the accusations. Judgment may result in penalties that add up to more than 30 years in prison for each of the defendants, if convicted.
With the extra session, the rapporteur intends to guarantee enough time for all ministers to present their votes and to be completed next week.
