Mineirinho breaks world record with 70 meters drop in Porto Alegre

by Marcelo Moreira

The hexacal world champion Sandro Vertical Skate, known as Mineirinho, broke a world record on Thursday (25) as he went down 70 meters at Megarrampa mounted on the facade of the Fernando Ferrari Administrative Center (Caff) in Porto Alegre. At 50, the São Paulo skateboarder surpassed his own 65 meter mark, recorded minutes earlier.

Before the historical descent, Mineirinho completed two progressive descents, 55 and 60 meters. Then it reached 65 meters and finally completed the 70 meters drop, impressing the audience and the technical team.

Guinness World Records representatives followed the descent to officialize the record record. In addition, Mineirinho seeks to approve another achievement when he records 94 km/h in the last descent, which would be the highest speed in a standard skate.

The event, called “Building Drop”, was organized by Red Bull in partnership with the Rio Grande do Sul government. The initiative turned the 21 -story and 85 meters high building into an unprecedented megarrampa in the state capital. The CAFF architectural curve, inaugurated in 1987, has always awakened the imagination of skateboarders, and has now become the scene of a historical maneuver.

As a counterpart for the use of public space, Red Bull has committed to build two new skateboards in municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul and to revitalize two others in the region.

Preparation

To face the challenge, Mineirinho underwent intense preparation. He trained with vests of more than 40 pounds to simulate G -strength – pressure that the body feels due to gravity and high speed acceleration – and used motorcycle motorcycles to test skate stability at high speed. By early September, tests had already performed in the building with downhill of up to 64 meters, but those maneuvers were not officially approved.

This was not the first time Mineirinho risked adapted urban structures. In 2019, he participated in a drop on the Estaiada Bridge in São Paulo. In Porto Alegre, the feat now has entered the history of world skate.
