Milei’s party loses to peronists in provincial elections

by Marcelo Moreira

Fuerza Patria, a broad front of peronian opposition to the government of Javier Milei, was a winner of the legislative elections on Sunday (7) in the province of Buenos Aires, which concentrates 37% of Argentina’s total electorate and a third of the country’s GDP. With almost 90% of the ballot boxes, the advantage was 13 points over Milei’s party, La Libertad Avanza. About 14 million voters were able to vote in the choice of 46 deputies and 23 provincial senators.

The result of the ballot boxes in Buenos Aires, despite a regional legislative election, is often a preview of the electorate’s trend to the October national elections, in the middle of the presidential term. Peronism was able to set aside the internal differences and came together with the provincial election, with a widely led by Cristina Kirschner, Governor Alex Kicillof and former Economy Minister Sergio Massa.

The opposition also knew how to explore conversation recordings attributed to former director of the National Disability Agency (andis), Diego Spagnuolo, ally of Milei, about a bribery system in the purchase of medicines. Part of the bribes would benefit Milei’s sister Karina (approximately 3%) and Undersecretary Eduardo “Lule” Menem. Milei’s chief of staff Guillermo Franco said the accusations are a “political operation” to destabilize Argentina.
