President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) decided to veto, on Monday (29), the stretch that reduced the period of ineligibility of politicians, anticipating the beginning of the counting of time, which is currently from the end of serving the sentence.
The project unifies the period in 8 years from the beginning of the penalty. The proposal was approved in Congress in early September. The decision was made based on opinions of the Attorney General of the Union (AGU) and the Ministry of Justice, which classified the provisions as unconstitutional.
With the veto, the proposal now returns to analysis by the National Congress, which may choose to maintain the presidential decision or overthrow it. If the veto is overthrown, the new rule may come into force, changing the current understanding of the ineligibility period provided for in the Clean Record Law.
