Jaguar’s New EV Caught Testing. Is That a Fake V-8 Sound?

by Marcelo Moreira

The Jaguar Type 00 concept hasn’t been met with overwhelming enthusiasm, but we’re still hopeful that the British automaker’s upcoming EV will still be a compelling option in the ultra-luxury space.

First announced in December, the Type 00—or whatever the production version will be called—is expected to launch sometime later this year. Ahead of its debut, a new spy video has surfaced showing prototypes testing on public roads.

Captured by the NCars YouTube channel, the footage reveals two prototypes navigating the winding mountain roads of Spain. According to the videographer, one of the vehicles appears to be further along in development, featuring updated wheels and new body details not seen on the original concept.

Both prototypes remain heavily camouflaged, making it difficult to discern many of the final design details. However, there is one clue we can gather from the video: the sound. See if you can hear it:

Listen closely, and you might be able to catch the faint rumble of what sounds like an engine. While it’s subtle, the videographer points out that it “makes a sound that is clearly that of a V-8 engine.” Given that Jaguar’s upcoming luxury coupe will be fully electric, it’s likely this is an artificial engine note being piped in through external speakers—a common feature among modern performance EVs.

Jaguar has previously emphasized that its new EV is “all about exuberance,” according to Martin Limpert, Global Managing Director of the Range Rover sub-brand. That said, drivers shouldn’t expect the same raw, V-8-powered thrills of models like F-Type or F-Pace SVR—even if that means losing some customers.

Still, performance won’t be lacking. Jaguar has confirmed the production version of the Type 00 will deliver 986 horsepower and should offer at least 430 miles (692 kilometers) of range on the WLTP cycle.

The production model is scheduled to debut later this year, with sales expected to begin in 2026 or early 2027.
