Images show an accident in the Glory Elevator, Lisbon Point of Portuguese authorities investigating the fatal accident that occurred with the famous Glory Elevator in Lisbon, confirmed in a report published on Saturday (6/9) that a cable of the vehicle broke moments before the tragedy. “After examining the wreckage at the scene, it was immediately determined that the cable that connected the two wagons had broken,” said a statement from the Office for Prevention and Investigation of Aircraft and Railroad Accidents (GPIAAF). The guard tried to trigger the emergency brakes, but could not avoid derailment, the investigators add. Sixteen people died and about 20 were injured when the upper wagon of the Yellow Funicular Glory collided with a building on Wednesday (3/9). Five of the dead were Portuguese, in addition to three British, two South Koreans, two Canadians, one American, one Ukrainian, a Swiss and a Frenchman, police said. Although the guard has called the pneumatic brakes and a manual brake when the cable loosened, it is unclear if another automatic brake was fired as it should, the report says. The report states that the wagon was traveling at about 60 km/h when he hit the building. The seven -page statement also states that the cable had only 337 days of its scheduled shelf life of 600 days. It is still unclear how many victims traveled to the wagon – which has a capacity of about 40 passengers – and how many were on the street, says the document. Six of the injured were admitted to intensive care units, while three suffered minor injuries. The investigators emphasize that they have not reached “valid conclusions” about the cause of the accident and will present a complete preliminary report in 45 days. Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro described the incident as “one of the greatest tragedies of our recent past.”
