The German Air Force held a combat air patrol on September 4, after detecting drones near the Romania border with Ukraine.
According to the Romania Ministry of Defense, radar surveillance systems identified drones to 36 nautical miles (about 66 km) northeast of Sulina in the evening. In response, two fighters Eurofighter Typhoon took off from Air Base 57 Mihail Kogálniceanu to monitor the situation.
The Romanian authorities reported that, soon after radar contact, the drones changed the route to the north and their electronic signs disappeared. The German fighters continued to monitor the area until they returned to the base.
The operation is part of NATO’s joint safety measures to reinforce the protection of Romanian airspace, a country that shares a direct border with Ukraine, amid the intensification of threats in the Black Sea.
