The Senate approved the complementary bill that deals with the ineligibility of politicians in Brazil. The proposal unifies in eight years the time in which parliamentarians are prevented from applying, loosening the previous rules. Now the text goes to President Lula’s sanction or veto.
In practice, the text reduces the punishment time for revoked politicians. This will apply to deputies, senators, councilors, governors, mayors and their vices. The change is that the stipulated deadline begins to count from the moment of the cassation and not after the end of the mandate to which the politician was elected and should comply.
The project entered the agenda at the end of 2024, in March and August 2025, when the vote was postponed for lack of consensus among party leaders.
