Kim Ju-Ae and Kim Jong-un in North Korea KCNA via Reuters North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, took her teenage daughter to Beijing this week on her first public trip abroad. The presence rekindled speculation that the young woman could be the father’s successor in charge of the North Korean dictatorship. ✅ Click here to follow the G1 international news channel on WhatsApp North Korea has never revealed the daughter’s name or age, but South Korean intelligence officials believe it is Kim Ju-AE. She was identified in 2013 by former American basketball player Dennis Rodman, who visited the Kim family and said she held the girl as a baby. Ju-Ae appeared just behind his father upon landing of the armored train used for the night trip between Pyongyang and the Chinese capital. Kim Jong-un participated in Beijing the military parade held on Wednesday (3) to recall the defeat of Japan in World War II. “Today, Ju-AE is the leading candidate for the next Supreme Leader of North Korea,” said Michael Madden, a North Korean leadership expert at Stimson Center in the United States. “She is gaining practical protocol experience that should be useful as both future leader and member of the regime’s central elite.” This is the first time Ju-Ae has been following his father outside the country, something like Kim Jong-un, or her aunt-a powerful figure in Pyongyang-had. “She is gaining valuable experience when greeting and interacting with foreign leaders,” added Madden. Analysts say there is no record of Kim Jong-un having accompanied his father, Kim Jong-il, on international trips. Kim Jong-il traveled abroad with his father, Kim Il-Sung, founder of the regime, in the 1950s. North Korean state media only revealed the existence of Kim Jong-un’s sons in 2022, when Ju-AE was presented in public during the release of an intercontinental ballistic missile. Little is known about the other children. South Korean intelligence evaluates Ju-AE as the most likely successor so far, although there are doubts about its rise in a dynasty marked by male dominance. It is estimated that it is about 13 years old. In recent months, Ju-AE has participated in increasingly important events, including a reception at the Russian Embassy in May. “The scope of her public appearances has expanded from military places to political and economic activities,” said Rachel Minyoung Lee, also a researcher at the Stimson Center. “If this is part of a succession campaign, it would certainly help in this effort, as it would be seen as Kim Ju-AE’s debut on the international scene.” According to Lee, it is still early to say that the visit confirms the young woman as heiress of Kim Jong-un. But the way the North Korean media will show Ju-AE in China can bring lighter signs about this role.
