The Court of Appeals of the 11th Circuit of the United States suspended on Thursday (4) the decision of a judge who ordered the dismantling of the Alligator illegator detention center Alcatraz until the end of October, which represents a victory for the Florida State Government and President Donald Trump.
The court upheld the appeal of the Federal Government and the State of Florida to suspend the decision of Judge Kathleen Williams of the Southern District of Florida. On August 21, Williams had set a two -month period to dismantle the site, opened on July 3 in a swamp region, and banned new immigrants.
“We said we would fight against it, that the mission would continue. So, I’m glad to say that the court of appeals has just suspended the decision and the case. Therefore, Alligator Alcatraz is, in fact, as we always said, open,” Florida Governor Ron Disantis said.
The decision also prevents Williams from whom Denantis called the “leftist judge” for being nominated by former President Barack Obama, continues with the case until the appeal process is completed.
“The mission of application of the immigration law continues. The press was delighted that, somehow Alligator Alcatraz was ‘closing’. We told them that it was not true. There are illegal foreigners who are still being removed and deported to their home countries,” said Desantis.
The court’s decision is a setback for environmental groups Friends of the Everglades and Center for Biological Diversity, as well as the Miccosukee indigenous tribe, which had filed a request in court for the prison to be disabled.
Since August, they said they were ready to defend the case to the last instances, anticipating that the process would reach the Supreme Court.
The suspension surprised because on Tuesday Destis had proposed another immigrant detention center in the northwest of the state called Panhandle Pokey after the decision against Alligator Alcatraz.
In addition, a message from Florida’s emergency management director Kevin Guthrie last week indicated that the Detention Center in the middle of the Everglades Swamp, “will soon have none.”
The center became a symbol of Trump’s migratory policy, which visited him on July 1, when it was estimated that the site could house up to 5,000 illegal immigrants.
“It’s a victory for Florida and President Trump’s agenda!” Said state attorney general James Uthmeier said on social networks.
Florida and Alligator Alcatraz have been symbols of Trump’s migratory policy, in whose government the number of people in custody of customs immigration and control service (Ice) almost doubled, reaching 61,226 detainees in August.
