The Cantareira system will operate in the so -called restriction range from October 1st after the fall in reservoir levels. The measure, which was not adopted since January 2022, was announced by the National Water Agency and the São Paulo State Water Agency.
Sabesp, the company responsible for water supply in the state of São Paulo, will be able to remove in October to 23 cubic meters per second of water, instead of the 27 cubic meters per second, currently in force. As a form of compensation, it can use the transposed flow of the Jaguari reservoir.
The Cantareira System is responsible for supplying 46% of the population of Greater São Paulo. The system transposes the Piracicaba river basin to the Alto Tietê basin.
The São Paulo government had already been adopting some measures to contain the reduction of water levels of reservoirs, such as reducing water pressure between seven in the evening and five in the morning, to preserve the level of reservoirs. Due to the levels below normal, Greater São Paulo has already reduced water pressure for 10 hours – from 7 pm to 5 pm.
This week, the São Paulo government also prohibited the granting of water capture in the state basins for not emergency purposes.
