Venezuela dictator Nicolás Maduro said on Wednesday (3), during the inauguration of a monument in Caracas for the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in the Pacific, that his regime will resist what he called “invested” from the United States. The statement occurred amid the sending of war ships and an American nuclear submarine to the Caribbean in a military anti-drug operation.
“Today imperialism launches a new onslaught, is neither the first nor the last, just a onslaught, and Venezuela is standing, and I say to you: Venezuela will stand, serenity, firmly, with unqualified faith in victory and peace,” said Maduro, in a speech transmitted by the state broadcaster Venezuelan television (VTV).
The dictator stated that the country will follow “in national union of all its people,” including military and police forces.
“We are good people, we are people who love peace, but who know: we are fierce warriors when they get into our land, our history and our rights. This land belongs to Venezuelans and Venezuelans, and there will be no traitor to the country or empire that can touch and profane the sacred ground that gave us the Libertadores,” he said.
The United States, under the leading of President Donald Trump, say the ongoing military operation close to Venezuela seeks to interrupt drug trafficking routes linked to the Chavista regime and reach the transnational criminal group Tren de Aragua, already classified by Washington as a terrorist organization. According to the Pentagon, the ongoing mission currently involves eight war vessels and aims to weaken the connections of chavism with drug trafficking.
While Maduro spoke, his ally and number two of the regime, Diosdado Cabello, launched a direct threat to opposing leader María Corina Machado, who had publicly supported US pressure from the US, saying the Chavista regime was told.
“If we tighten us, we squeeze,” Cabello said in a national network. Then he warned, “Don’t believe that here they will assault us and you will be saved, no, it doesn’t exist.”
The threat was interpreted as a warning of reprisals against Machado, recognized as one of the main voices of the opposition.
