Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he will travel to Washington next Monday (18) to meet with his American counterpart Donald Trump. The statement comes a day after the Republican met with the Russian dictator, Vladimir Putin, Alaska, in a summit criticized by the Ukrainian community for not having resulted in an immediate ceasefire agreement.
In post on XZelensky said he was invited to the American capital after “long and substantial” conversation with Trump, “thanked the invitation” and reaffirmed support for the propychetial proposal of a trilateral summit between the American, Russian and Ukrainian leader.
“We support President Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, USA and Russia. Ukraine emphasizes that key issues can be discussed at leader level, and a trilateral format is suitable for that,” he said.
“It is important for Europeans to be involved in every step to ensure reliable security guarantees, along with the United States. We also discuss positive signs on the American side regarding Ukraine security assurance. We continue to coordinate our positions with all partners. I thank everyone who are helping,” he added.
After the personal meeting with Trump, the so-called other European leaders, such as French President Emmanuel Macron; German Chancellor Friedrich Merz; Finnish President Alexander Stubb; The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni; between others.
Zelensky had already stated the desire for a trilateral meeting between him, Trump and Putin and stressed that the main guidelines for the possible summit is the ceasefire on all fronts and the liberation of prisoners of war, civil prisoners and Ukrainian children deported as the priority demands to Russia.
“Kills should stop as soon as possible, there must be a ceasefire on both the battlefield and in the sky and also in the attacks on our port infrastructure,” he said.
“All prisoners of war and civilians must be released and children kidnapped by Russia need to be returned. Thousands of ours go in captivity: everyone should return home,” he added.
Zelensky said, moreover, he asked Trump that if the trilateral meeting does not happen or if Russia tries to avoid the end of the war, the sanctions against Moscow are intensified.
Faced with potential peace negotiations, the Ukrainian President has once again claimed reliable and long -term security guarantees in which both the US and European countries are involved.
Zelensky did not categorically reject the possibility of yielding territories to Russia, something Trump suggested as inevitable, but stressed that it is a decision that cannot be made without the participation of Ukraine herself.
“All important issues for Ukraine should be debated with the participation of Ukraine and no question, in particular those of a territorial nature, can be decided without Ukraine,” he said.
