Photos and videos of compliance between US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on the arrival of Kremlin leader for a summit in Alaska on Friday (15) are in evidence in news, websites and social networks worldwide.
However, some are wondering: Why does Putin, who has a warrant of arrest issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against him, was not arrested when he arrived in the US territory?
In March 2023, the ICC ordered Putin’s arrest due to the illegal deportation of Ukrainians to Russia since the beginning of the invasion of the neighboring country in February 2022.
However, his arrest did not occur on Friday because the US, like China, Russia, Israel and other countries, are not members of the court and therefore do not recognize their jurisdiction.
Even in June, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced sanctions against four ICC judges for Israel’s investigation of the War in the Gaza Strip, which led the court to issue an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on accusations of war crimes and humanity in the Palestinian enclave.
Prior to that, the Trump government had blocked any assets that ICC attorney Karim Khan has in the United States and prevented from entering US territory due to investigation against Netanyahu and other Israeli authorities.
However, even a country that is a member of the ICC refused to arrest Putin in 2024. In October last year, Judges of the Court reported Mongolia to its legislative body and supervisor, the Assembly of States Partes, for not fulfilling the arrest warrant against the Russian dictator, when he traveled to his territory in September.
The Asian country is a signatory to the Rome Statute, which created the court, as well as Brazil. For now, however, there was no punishment to Mongolia.
Due to the TPI arrest warrant, Putin did not come to the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, in November, nor to the Brics summit in the same city last month.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva caused indignation in 2023 by saying that both Ukraine and Russia are responsible for war in the first country and saying that Putin would not be arrested if he came to Brazil for the G20 summit. Then the petista disconcerted the arrest warrant against the Russian dictator.
