Former United States President Donald Trump said there is no definitive agreement between Washington and Moscow yet. The statement was made after a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which both discussed the war in Ukraine, bilateral relations and the possibility of cooperation in strategic areas.
During the meeting, Putin highlighted the symbolic importance of reunion. He said he greeted Trump as a “neighbor” when he landed, noting that the two countries are separated only for a few kilometers in the Bering Strait, but distant in politics and culture. According to Russian leader, the conversation was marked by gestures of cordiality and the memory of historical ties between the two nations.
Putin mentioned the common past of the United States and Russia during World War II and the Cold War, citing memorial in honor of Soviet and American pilots who died in fighting. For him, recalling these episodes can help rebuild a relationship of cooperation. The Russian President said that current dialogue can benefit not only the two countries, but also the international community.
According to Putin, Trump has played an important role in an attempt to find solutions for war in Ukraine. He stressed that the security of the region worries Moscow and defended the construction of progressive agreements in stages to reach a ceasefire and ensure stability in Europe. The Russian leader also stated that Russia and the United States have great economic and technological potential to be explored together.
Trump, in turn, classified the meeting as “very productive” and said there were advances, but stressed that peace will only be reached when there is a definitive agreement. The Republican said he talked to NATO leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after Putin’s negotiations. He thanked members of his administration for his support during the negotiations.
According to the former president, the United States remains open to establish new international understandings, but the priority is the end of the war. Trump stated that thousands of people die weekly in Ukraine and defended urgency to seek a solution. “We have a good chance to move forward, but we haven’t reached the end yet,” he said.
Trump also highlighted the personal relationship he maintains with Putin, stating that both have already experienced moments of divergence, but managed to maintain dialogue channels. He said he expects new meetings with Russian leader in the coming months. At the end of his speech, he reiterated that peace in Ukraine remains the central goal of conversations.
