United States President Donald Trump said on Friday (29), in a publication on the Social Truth, that the crimes in Washington, DC, fell “drastically” after the decree of the Criminal Emergency Law and the National Guard sending to the streets on the 11th. According to the president, car theft fell 87% in just two weeks.
“Washington will soon be a crime -free zone in just 14 days, much faster than expected”, he wrote.
Expressive fall of the indices
Data from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) confirm that since the beginning of the federal operation, there has been a 23% reduction in violent crimes and a drop of about 25% in crimes against property, such as theft and vehicle theft in the US capital. The White House pointed out that the ongoing operation in Washington includes joint actions between the FBI, the Immigration Agency (ICE), the internal security department and the National Guard troops.
Official reports show that, between 11 and 25 August, more than a thousand people were arrested. Washington Attorney General Jeanine Pirro said 88% of detainees have had a formal complaint in court. Period without homicides
Earlier this week, Trump pointed out that the US capital registered a sequence of days without homicides, something that, he said, “was not seen for decades.” Police figures, conveyed by the British station BBCThey confirm that between 13 and 22 August, there were no records of murders, which represented a rare interval without homicides in the American capital.
Arrests and seizure of weapons
According to the US Department of Justice, at least 135 weapons have been seized since the start of the operation in Washington DC. Many of the prisoners currently respond for illegal possession of weapons, drug trafficking and arrest warrants open for serious crimes such as murder and kidnapping.
Trump justified the intervention in the US capital based on the D.C. Home Rule Actwhich authorizes the federal government to assume security control in emergency cases. The president stated that he would not allow “the crime, chaos and uncontrolled violence” to endanger the operation of institutions in the capital.
Authorities acknowledged that federal reinforcement contributed to accelerate the fall of crime. Kevin Donahue, the city’s administrator, told the newspaper New York Times That “we already had a good trend before the arrival of the federal, and that improved even more.”
