A man called on drivers who are habitually leaving water bottles inside the car after a major disaster with their jeep.
Guero Navalette in Texasposted a video to his TikTok account and explained that there appears to be a small fire inside the car and that he is cleaning his jeep.
Vulo didn’t share much details such as whether the bottle was made from plastic or glass, how long it was exposed to sunlight, or how much temperatures were outside, but the results were shocking.
“This means that if you place a water bottle in the passenger seat and the sun hits it at the right angle, it can turn into a magnifying glass,” Navalet wrote in the text in the video, which has already been viewed over 500,000 times.
Believe it or not, this can actually happen. When sunlight reflects off a bottle of water, the material can act as a magnifying glass, focusing sunlight on a specific point, causing small fires that can spread quickly.
Heat also causes the liquid inside the bottle to expand, creating pressure, and if the pressure rises too much, the bottle may burst.
Additionally, plastic bottles can begin to decompose due to heat, causing chemicals to be released into the water, bringing the risk of chemical contamination.
What lessons are you taught? Do not leave water bottles inside the car. However, the exception is thermos-type bottles that can withstand temperature changes in the outside air and are generally highly durable.
“Thank you for letting me know. I’m going to clean my car today,” one TikTok user wrote in the video’s comments section. “To-do list: Clean the first water bottle in your car,” another joked, and a third warned, “My car’s windows are too dark so this won’t happen.”
