Autonomous vehicle falls into a hole in a street in China, and a passenger is rescued with a staircase a self -employed vehicle operated by Baidu’s Apollo GO service, fell into a deep building well while carrying a passenger in Chongqing, China. The accident occurred on Wednesday (6), according to reports from the local media, and increased safety concerns in autonomous vehicles. Although the vehicle has fallen into a narrow and side hole, the passenger in the car was unharmed and was rescued by locals, who used an impromptu stairs. Videos circulating on Chinese social networks showed a white vehicle with the Baidu Apollo logo lying on the ditch (see the video above). Reuters was able to check the location from the store facade, commercial plates, trees and the street layout, which corresponded to the street view and the file images. The owner of a local store told the Chinese newspaper Huashang that the construction site had barriers and warning signs, although it was not clear how the vehicle ignored these safety measures. Baidu had not yet commented on the fire to the last update of this report. The case generated a wide discussion on Chinese social networks about robotaxis security. Baidu operates one of China’s largest autonomous vehicle fleets and carries out robotaxis commercial operations in various cities, including Wuhan, Beijing and Chongqing. The company also recently struggled to expand its robotaxi service to global markets, signing partnerships with US Uber Technologies and lyft application transport platforms.
