The American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and Paraguayan Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano signed a Safe Third Third Country Agreement on Thursday (14) in Washington (STCA) between the United States and Paraguay.
By this agreement, asylum applicants from other countries may request that the United States will grant the benefit while in Paraguayan territory.
“The secretary and I have focused a lot on establishing safe agreements with third countries in Latin America, South America and even in Africa. Therefore, this was a big step for us. We are very grateful for the opportunity to work with you,” said US internal security secretary, Troy Edgar, at the signature ceremony, according to the state department.
“The American asylum system has suffered significant abuse in the previous government. And being able to sign an agreement like this really begins to relieve load on internal security and our ability to process and provide the asylum process for people who really deserve and go through the process,” added Edgar.
“Today, this agreement represents the profound commitment to our government to work not only on migration programs, but also on security,” said Ramírez.
The signing of the agreement with the government of Santiago Peña reinforces the approach of Donald Trump management with right -wing leaders in Latin America.
Earlier, the Republican government had signed an agreement with El Salvador to receive immigrants deported by the United States and at the end of July an appointment to exempt Argentines from the tourism and business visa requirement, on the South American country’s return to a program from which he had been removed in 2002, Visa Waiver Program or Visa Exemption Program (VWP).
