The United States announced the revocation of visas granted to Palestinian authorities who would participate in the UN General Assembly, scheduled for next month in New York. In addition, the US government has also denied entry authorizations to representatives of the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
According to the State Department, the decision was made based on national security issues. Washington accuses both Palestinian entities to weaken peace efforts in the Middle East and not explicitly condemn terrorist actions.
Some authorities, including President Mahmoud Abbas, are prevented from traveling to New York to participate in the UN annual meeting and make their speeches before the member countries.
The measure adopted by the Trump administration occurs amid growing international support – especially by European powers – contrary to the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip. Israel has already declared its intention to assume total control of the territory. Among the countries that announced support to the Palestinian State: France. United Kingdom and Spain.
Amid tension climbing, Israel classified the city of Gaza as a “dangerous combat zone.” In addition, it suspended the humanitarian corridor that worked in the region.
