USA hardens visa rules for pregnant women

by Marcelo Moreira

The US embassy in Brazil released, on Thursday (14), a warning directed to pregnant women on entry restrictions in the country.

The warning states that travel with the main intention to give birth to US territory, a practice known as “birth tourism”, is not allowed.

According to the embassy, visa requests will be denied if there is evidence of this motivation. Consular officers received guidance to identify and block suspicious cases.

The US government has been making it difficult for pregnant women and intensified actions to limit citizenship to newborns of foreigners. The current law automatically guarantees the right to those born in the US.

In late January, President Donald Trump ordered the end of this constitutional right to children of irregular immigrants. The measure is part of the hardening package of migratory policy.
