USA condemn Bolsonaro’s house arrest imposed by Alexandre de Moraes

by Marcelo Moreira

The US government sentenced, on Monday night (4), the decision of Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court (STF), which determined the house arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

The official reaction came through a publication on the social network “X”, made by the Office of the Western Hemisphere Office, a body linked to the US State Department.

In the message, the US government harshly criticized the measure.

“Minister Moraes, now sanctioned by the US as a human rights violator, continues to use Brazilian institutions to silence opposition and threaten democracy. Imposing even more restrictions on Jair Bolsonaro’s ability to publicly defend himself is not a public service. Let Bolsonaro speak!” Says the text.

The publication ends with a direct statement:

“The United States condemn the order of Moraes that imposes house arrest to Bolsonaro and will be responsible for all who collaborate or facilitate sanctioned conduct.”

Alexandre de Moraes was recently included by the US government in Magnitsky Law, which allows sanctions against foreign authorities accused of human rights violations. The decision, made unilaterally by Washington, intensified the diplomatic tension between the two countries.

Bolsonaro’s house arrest was determined by breaking precautionary measures imposed by Alexandre de Moraes, they include; Use of electronic anklet, night payment and communication restrictions.
