USA condemn Bolsonaro’s arrest and promise retaliation

by Marcelo Moreira

The Western Hemisphere Department, an organ of the United States State Department, under the government of President Donald Trump, criticized on Monday (4), by publication on the social network X, the decision of Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court (STF), which determined the house arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

In the published message, the US government agency stated that the “Minister Moraes, now a Human Rights sanctioned by the US, continues to use Brazil’s institutions to silence opposition and threaten democracy.” The message continues: “Imposing even more restrictions on Jair Bolsonaro’s ability to defend himself in public is not a public service. Let Bolsonaro speak!”

“The United States condemn the order of Moraes that has imposed house arrest to Bolsonaro and will hold all those who collaborate or facilitate sanctioned conduct,” the Western hemisphere department is emphatic.

Minister Moraes’s decision to impose house arrest to Bolsonaro was taken on Monday after the magistrate understood that the former president failed to comply with restrictions set in July, which banned him from using social networks, including through third parties, in public demonstrations. According to Moraes, this Sunday (3), during a demonstration in Rio de Janeiro, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) called his father, who, using electronic anklet, greeted the protesters: “Good afternoon, Copacabana, Good afternoon, Brazil. A hug to all, is for our freedom. We are together.”

In the order, Moraes states that with this act Bolsonaro acted “unlawful” by addressing protesters, producing “prefabricated material for their supporters to continue to coerce the Federal Supreme Court and obstruct justice”.
