The Deputy Secretary of State of the United States, Christopher Landau, said on Monday (11), in the podcast Triggeredpresented by Donald Trump Jr., son of President Donald Trump, who “the Venezuelan people should rise and claim their freedom” and announced that Washington prepares new measures to increase pressure on the Nicolás Maduro regime.
According to Landau, American politics will continue to support democratic groups in the country, but without assuming the role of replacing popular action.
“We cannot go around the world by changing governments as we understand,” said the deputy secretary, noting that experience in Iraq and Afghanistan has shown the risk of US external interventions to provoke regime changes.
Landau criticized Maduro’s permanence in power after the 2024 elections, in which, according to him, María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia of the opposing platform won “overwhelming”.
“The country voted massively by Edmundo González Urrutia and María Corina Machado last year. While Maduro and his circle maintain control, the country will continue under the domain of a criminal regime,” he said.
For the diplomat, this scenario helps further aggravate the exodus of millions of Venezuelans – over seven million in the last decade – generating instability throughout the American continent.
Among the current pressure measures against Maduro, he cited the rise to $ 50 million of the reward for information that leads to the capture or conviction of the Venezuelan dictator – “double what was offered by Osama bin Laden” – and the classification of the Chavista regime core as a foreign terrorist organization.
