US government announces that it will require face -to -face interviews to approve visas

by Marcelo Moreira

This Monday (11), the US embassy announced that it will require face-to-face interviews for the granting of visas. Applicants of most categories, either for renewal or issuance, must attend a face -to -face interview with a consular officer.

The measure announced by the State Department replaces the exemption guidelines that have been in force since February 2025. Although the interview is still dismissed to certain requests of applicants, the measure revokes the exceptions adopted during the pandemic – such as the possibility of changing the visa category without the need for face -to -face attendance.

According to the previous rules, the applicants of diplomatic or official visas were exempt, in addition to those who renewed the same category, provided they had not had a previous request denied and the latter had expired less than 12 months ago.

Currently, applicants of diplomatic or official visas are exempt from the presential interview, including categories A-1, A-2, C-3 (except attendants, employees or servants of accredited authorities), G-1, NATO-1 A NAT-6 and Tecro E-1.

Also exempt are those who are renewing visas of type B-1 (business), B-2 (tourism or short-term visits) or B1/B2, provided that the previous visa is still within the standard expiration date.

Nevertheless, Mexican citizens requesting the border crossing card can be dismissed from the interview, provided they meet all the following criteria:

The new request is made within 48 months after the previous visa is due;

The applicant is at least 18 years old on the date of issuance of the previous visa;

The request takes place in the country of its nationality or residence;

There is no history of visa refusal (except in the cases reversed or dismissed);

There is no apparent ineligibility or potential
