The US Coastal Guard Investigative Council concluded on Tuesday that the “inappropriate design” of the submersible Titan was one of the main factors that contributed to its implosion in 2023, which left five dead.
Titan was on a tourist expedition to the wreckage of Titanic – British passenger ship who sank in 1912, killing at least 1,500 people approaching – when he lost contact with the support boat during the descent.
“The implosion could have been avoided,” said board president Jason Neubauer, when the report was released after a two -year investigation.
The investigators determined that the “inadequate process of project, certification, maintenance and inspection of the Titan” was what culminated in events. It was also added to the document that Oceangate used “intimidation tactics, scientific operations subsidies and the company’s favorable reputation to escape regulatory evaluation”.
The board concluded that the company did not investigate or corrected known anomalies in the hull after the expedition to Titanic in 2022. It was stated that data from Titan’s real -time monitoring system should have been analyzed and adopted during the expedition.
