United States Secretary of Justice, Pam Bondi, ordered federal prosecutors to start an investigation into members of the government of former President Barack Obama. Authorities would have manufactured intelligence reports related to Russia’s influence on the 2016 US elections, from which Donald Trump came out victorious. On his social network, the current president celebrated the “great news” and stated that “the truth always prevails.”
According to the Reuters news agency, a large jury will be called upon to analyze evidence and decide on issuing subpoenas on a criminal accusation. For Bondi, the evidence points out that democratic authorities would have tried to disseminate false information that Trump’s campaign had ties with the Russian government.
The inquiry follows a recommendation by the National Intelligence Director, Tulsi Gabbard, who made public documents that would weaken Obama government allegations that Moscow tried to favor the Republican candidate in the dispute against Democrat Hillary Clinton.
In July, Gabbard released a memorandum entitled “Suppression of Intelligence Information Intelligence Community.” The document would prove the alleged information manufacturing scheme by showing that “Russian actors and criminals did not impact” the 2016 presidential election through cyber attacks on infrastructure. The intelligence director also requested the opening of an investigation against former President Barack Obama and members of her administration by alleged conspiracy.
Russian interference
According to Gabbard, former Democratic president and his intelligence employees promoted an “artificial narrative that Russia interfered in the 2016 elections to help President Trump win.” Among the documents released there are a minutes of a meeting that would show that Obama guided his advisers to publish an intelligence assessment after the election.
Published in December 2016, the report would detail the alleged tools and actions used by Moscow to harm Hillary Clinton and benefit Donald Trump. Despite highlighting that Russian interference did not affect the outcome of the election, the document pointed out that Kremlin’s goal was to sow distrust in the US democratic system.
