The recent report released by the United States on freedom of expression in the world pointed out that “the situation of human rights in Brazil has been declining throughout the year” and brought criticism to the Supreme Court Minister (STF) Alexandre de Moraes and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT).
While the Trump management document quotes that “broad and disproportionate measures were taken to undermine freedom of expression”, “disproportionately suppressing the discourse of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, as well as elected journalists and politicians”, the edition published in 2024, the last year of the Biden government, brought different notes on freedom of expression, anti-Semitism and the institutions of Brazil.
The 2024 report, which analyzed the previous year, said an improvement in press freedom, citing a decrease in attacks on journalists due to the departure of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) of the presidency.
The democratic document, which considered the election that elected Lula for the third time free of abuse and fair, states that the Constitution of Brazil, as well as the laws of the country, provide freedom of expression and that the federal government respects this fundamental right.
In the text, Bolsonaro is appointed as a former president who “verbally attacking journalists and press vehicles.”
Observations of how a democratic political system, added to the independent press and an effective judiciary can be combined to ensure freedom of expression are listed in the report.
The document also cited a concern with the “hatred discourse” disseminated on the networks: “The broad use of social media facilitated online hatred discourse against journalists, citizens and institutions.”
In the document released on Tuesday (12) by the Trump administration, Lula is criticized for statements about the war between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip, which would configure anti-Semitism. Biden management, on the other hand, praised measures from the federal government in this regard. Democrats cited arrests of members of neo -Nazi cells and the criminalization of Nazism as an advance in combating hatred of Jews.
Trump Management Report also criticizes other countries
In addition to Brazil the document released by Trump management also alleged worrying situation in countries in Europe, China and Latin America.
On the European continent, the United States cite a “worsening” in the human rights situation in Germany, the United Kingdom and France, the three largest economic and military powers in Europe.
“Significant human rights issues have included restrictions on freedom of expression and reliable reports of crimes, violence or threats of violence motivated by anti -Semitism,” the State Department of Germany said.
In Cuba, the document points to a series of reports of human rights violations, including disappearances, torture, arrests, restrictions on freedom of expression and press, restrictions on religious freedom, trafficking in persons and prohibition of unions and workers’ association.
Regarding the Venezuelan dictatorship, the text cites that the country “worsened significantly” in 2024, the year of electoral fraud that maintained chavismo in power.
“Throughout the year, and particularly after the presidential election of July 28, Nicolás Maduro and his representatives committed serious human rights violations, reaching a new milestone in law degradation after the election, according to UN UN International Mission in September in September,” the document says.
In Nicaragua, it is pointed out that “the government intensified attacks on civil freedoms and also violated religious freedom, persecuting and holding faithful and religious leaders.”
About China, the US accuses it with “genocide and crimes against humanity,” which, for Trump management, “occurred all year round against predominantly Muslims and members of other minority ethnic and religious groups in Xinjiang.”
