Ukraine received its eighth medium-range air defense system Iris-T SLM from Germany, being the second supplied in 2025.
The information was released by the German Aid To Ukraine project, which accompanies Berlin’s military aid to Kiev.
“According to my information, two weeks ago, as part of Germany’s continuous military support, Ukraine received its eighth Iris-T SLM system. This further strengthened the capabilities of the Ukraine Air Force,” said the author of the project.
With this delivery, the German government has already transferred two of the four systems promised to 2025.
Iris-T SLM: Composition and Capabilities
According to the project, a typical system delivered to Ukraine includes:
- 3 Iris-T SLM Launchers
- 2 Short range missile launchers Iris-T SLS
- Radar trml-4d
- Control center
- Recharge vehicle
- MOBILE DEPOSIT OF SHARE PARTS
- Mobile Workshop
Each system has a range of up to 40 km in ideal conditions and is highly effective against drones, cruise missiles, enemy aircraft and other targets up to 20 km altitude.
In June 2025, a unit of the LVIV anti-aircraft Missile Brigade toppled seven Russian cruise missiles during its first battle using Iris-T SLM, gradually replacing the old Soviet systems S-300.
“During the repulsion of a massive attack of missiles and aircraft, seven Russian missiles entered our destruction zone. We slaughtered them one by one,” commander Vitaliy said.
Iris-T, originally an infrared guided AR-AR-AR-AR-AR Missile, was adapted for land releases. The SLM version reaches targets up to 40 km, while SLS has a range of up to 12 km.
After the Russian invasion began, partner countries commissioned 18 Iris-T SLM systems for Ukraine:
- 17 funded by Germany
- 1 by Norway
The initial contract was signed in June 2022 and, in October of the same year, Ukraine received the first system in record time.
