Peter Navarro, President Donald Trump’s advisor, said that if the Supreme Court confirms the recent court decision that considered unconstitutional much of Trump’s tariff, “it will be the end of the United States.” Navarro gave an interview to the Fox News channel and defended import taxation, stating that no one intended to make them permanent. The information is from the newspaper The State of S.Paulo.
On Friday, the United States Court of Appeals to the Federal Circuit in Washington ruled that the recent increase in tariffs based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Law (IEEPA) was illegal because the US commercial deficit with other countries would not be an emergency. The Court did not analyze tariffs on car imports, automotive parts, steel and aluminum, raised through the commercial expansion law. Even in the case of tariffs considered illegal, however, the Court of Appeals determined that they would not be overturned immediately, giving the government until October 14 to renegotiate the tariffs or resort to the Supreme Court.
In the interview, Navarro countered the argument, stating that the “commercial deficit is absolutely devastating to this country”, as well as the wave of fentanyl consumption, which the government uses as a justification to tax products from China, Canada and Mexico – if the three countries adopt effective measures to prevent the drug from entering the US, the rates can be removed, the advisor said. Otherwise, and if the Supreme Court confirms the Court of Appeals’ verdict, “President Trump will be right and will be the end of the United States,” Navarro added.
