The government of US President Donald Trump has decided to end the protection offered by the secret service to former vice president Kamala Harris.
The decision was made official in a memorandum signed on Thursday (28) and will take effect on September 1, according to documents obtained by vehicles as BBC e Politico.
In the United States, the law guarantees lifetime protection of the secret service to all former presidents and their wives, a rule restored in 2013 after being temporarily reduced to ten years. Already the former vice presidents do not have the same privilege: they only receive security for six months after leaving office, a benefit that can be extended only by presidential decision. It was precisely this exception that then -President Joe Biden granted Kamala Harris – expanding his protection for another year – and that Trump has decided to revoke now.
The memorandum signed on Thursday states that the secret service should “discontinue any security procedures previously authorized by executive memorandum, in addition to those required by law, to the following person, from September 1, 2025: former vice-president Kamala D. Harris”.
Sources of the US government said to CBS News that a recent risk assessment did not find evidence that justified the maintenance of protection by the secret service to Kamala beyond the legal deadline.
With the end of the official coverage, Harris will lose the escort of agents in his displacements, the surveillance of his Los Angeles residence and the preventive intelligence collection against potential threats.
