United States President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Russia will face “very severe consequences” if dictator Vladimir Putin does not accept a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine at the meeting that the two leaders will have next Friday (15) in Alaska.
“There will be consequences,” Trump said during an event at the Kennedy Center in Washington, according to CNN reports.
The US president was asked if such consequences would be new sanctions or tariffs, but disconcerted. “Needless to say. [Mas] There will be very severe consequences, ”he replied.
Trump made the comment after a virtual meeting with leaders from Ukraine, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Finland, NATO and the European Union (EU) about the meeting with Putin on Friday.
The European allies expressed enthusiasm for the possibility of a ceasefire. “I said this personally to President Trump, during the more than three years this conflict is happening, we have not even had the most remote possibility of a really viable solution, a viable way to get a ceasefire,” said UK Prime Minister Keir Stmerer during the video conferencing, according to images later released by the BBC station.
“Now we have this opportunity, thanks to the work that the president [Trump] It did, ”added the British leader.
Trump confirmed the meeting with Putin last Friday (8), the day when a deadline was given by the United States for Russia to negotiate a ceasefire with Ukraine.
Otherwise, a 100% rate on importing Russian products and a secondary at the same level to countries that buy from Russia would be applied. The tariffs have not been imposed and since then Trump has not spoken of the subject anymore.
On Wednesday, the US President again said that he intends to mark another meeting with Putin, this time with the presence of the Ukrainian representative, Volodymyr Zelensky, after Friday’s meeting.
“There is a great chance of having a second meeting, which will be more productive than the first. Because the first is: I will find out where we are and what we are doing,” said Trump, who added that this second meeting will only be scheduled if the meeting with Putin “running well”.
