President Donald Trump commented on Tuesday that he expects to announce tariffs on semiconductors and chips next week to force these high technology components to be manufactured in the United States, while claiming to be thinking of progressively increasing rates about pharmaceutical products to 250%.
In an interview with the channel CNBCTrump assured that “next week” the government will announce specific semiconductor rates and chips because it wants “that they are manufactured in the United States,” recalling the multimillionaire investment that Taiwanese TSMC made in Arizona (during Joe Biden’s term) to produce these components in the United States.
As for pharmaceutical products, the Republican leader said that initially increased rates will be small, so that within a year, “or at most a year and a half”, they will increase by 150% “and then will rise to 250%”, the largest sectoral increase pronounced by the president so far.
Trump also defended the threat of new tariffs about countries such as Switzerland, with an increase of 39% if there is no agreement this week, arguing that they are countries that have a high deficit with the United States.
The US agent also said that in the “next 24 hours” could announce new rates about India by buying Russian oil, “which helps finance the war machine” after agreeing to increase commercial barriers to the country by 25%.
