United States President Donald Trump told European and NATO leaders who plans to meet in person next week with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to discuss a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine.
The information was published on Wednesday by the American newspaper The New York Times, which cited two people who received information about the plan as sources.
According to these sources, Trump also said that after the meeting with Putin, he then plans to hold a meeting with the Russian dictator and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky. The meeting would only be attended by the three heads of state, without the presence of other leaders. The place was not informed.
According to NYT, Trump spoke about these plans on a telephone call with Zelensky, UK Prime Minister Keir Stmerer, German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, American Vice President Jd Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and United States Special Envoy.
Trump made the call after Witkoff had held his fourth meeting with Putin early in Moscow, a meeting that was considered productive on both sides, but after which the White House confirmed that Russia’s secondary tariffs will still be applied from Friday (8).
Last week, Trump reduced from 50 to ten days the deadline for Moscow to reach a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine.
Otherwise, a 100% rate on importing Russian products and a secondary at the same level to countries that buy from Russia will be applied later this week.
Trump commented on the meeting between his envoy and Putin on the Truth Social network, but did not talk about the plans to meet the Russian dictator.
“My special envoy, Steve Witkoff, recently had an extremely productive meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. There was a great progress! Then I updated some of our European allies,” the president wrote.
“Everyone agrees that this war needs to come to an end, and we will work for it in the coming days and weeks,” he said.
