United States President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he or she ordered to work “immediately” in a new “high precision” census that uses data obtained after the 2024 presidential elections and exclude illegal immigrants.
“I ordered our trade department to start working immediately to a new high -accuracy census based on current data and numbers and, fundamentally, using the results and information obtained in the 2024 presidential elections,” Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social.
The American agent, who since returning to power in January has intensified the policy of deportation and denial of asylum, added that illegal immigrants who are currently in the country “will not be accounted for in the census”, although the count always included all people living in the country, regardless of status.
The last US population census was held in 2020 and the next is scheduled for 2030.
According to the country’s constitution, which stipulates the frequency and procedures of the research, the census is conducted every ten years and the results are the only valid for the attribution of electoral districts and the representation in Congress.
Congress, currently under the control of the Republican Party, has the power to order additional or intermediate censuses through ordinary laws, although they are used only for statistical purposes and their conclusions should not be used for the redistribution of districts.
The actions of the US President coincide with a fierce controversy at the national level for the attempted republican legislators in Texas to redesign the state’s electoral map, a proposal driven by Trump that could add five chairs to his party in the House of American representatives in the middle elections in 2026.
The presentation of the measure in the state legislature provoked an intense rejection among the Texas Democrats, who abandoned the state to block the advance of the proposal. In response, Republican governor Gregg Abbott threatened to dismiss his positions and arrest them.
This Thursday, a Texan senator announced that the FBI will help in locate these parliamentarians.
