United States President Donald Trump announced on Thursday (7), the holding of a new population census that disregards irregular immigrants in the country. The decision was communicated through the Truth Social Network and made an order sent to the Department of Commerce, responsible for the survey.
According to Trump, the new census will be “highly accurate” and based on “current and verifiable” data, including information collected during the 2024 presidential election. The measure can significantly alter the distribution of chairs in the mayor of representatives, as the census serves as the basis for the redistribution of the congress seats, held every 10 years, with the latter having been performed in 2020.
The announcement occurs amid the efforts of the Republican Party to redesign electoral districts in strategic states, such as Texas. Republicans expect to secure up to five additional vacancies in the 2026 legislative elections with changes in the district map.
