A dense layer of toxic foam was recorded in stretches of the Tietê River, in the municipality of Salto, in the interior of São Paulo. Images show the phenomenon covering a large extension of the riverbed, causing concern among residents and environmentalists.
According to technicians, the foam is the result of the presence of chemicals found in products such as detergents, saponaceans and even toothpaste. These waste, irregularly dumped in watercourses, react with the movement of the water and form the thick and white foam.
Environmentalists warn that the problem has become increasingly frequent and is getting worse over the years, reflecting disability in sewage treatment and controlling industrial pollution.
In a statement, Cetesb (São Paulo State Environmental Company) reported that it intensified inspections in the region and has already applied fines to irregular launches. The State Government said it intends to invest R $ 20 billion in basic sanitation by 2029, aiming to reduce pollution in the rivers of São Paulo.
