Thailand approved the purchase of four new Gripen Jas 39E/F fighter jets from the Swedish manufacturer, Saab, to strengthen their aims in the midst of tensions with Cambodia.
The move was announced by the Thai Royal Air Force on August 5 after the government authorized the purchase to replace the inoperable machines.
The decision was made in the midst of rumors that the Swedish government has blocked the sale after allegedly used Thai fighter jets to attack in Cambodia. At the same time, both the Swedish Embassy in Bangkok and the Swedish government denied any embargo or restriction affecting the sale.
Gripen E/F fighter jets were elected in 2023, following a comparative analysis with the United States F-16V models. Thai Air Force plans to modernize up to 12 new aircraft between 2025 and 2029. The Air Force Commander will visit Sweden in August to finalize the sale agreement.
