Sooner or later thisquibo will be from Venezuela, says Maduro

Dictator Nicolás Maduro said on Monday that “sooner or later” the region of Essequibo, which belongs to Guyana, will be from Venezuela. The territory, about 160,000 km² and rich in mineral resources, is the target of dispute between the two countries for over a century.

“The miracle of the complete recovery of Essequibo we will see sooner or later, make the maneuver that makes Exxonmobil, imperialism and the International Court [de Justiça, CIJ]”, Maduro said in his weekly program broadcast by the state station VTV.

The leader of the Chavista regime has again stated that he will not recognize any decision of the CIJ in the process open at the request of Guyana, which seeks to resolve the territorial issue based on the Paris arbitration report of 1899 – a document that attributed the sovereignty of the territory to the then British Guyana.

“We do not recognize this judgment, we do not recognize any decision that leaves there. It is spurious, goes against the regulations of the International Court itself,” said Maduro. According to him, the Venezuelan dictatorship presented to the court a new document that would contain the “historical truth” of the country’s rights over the region.

Venezuela considers the null 1899 report and claims thatquibo based on the 1966 Geneva Agreement, signed with the United Kingdom, which provided for negotiations to solve the dispute – a process that was never completed.
